Explore Windows 10 Creators Update, and the new features that are part of this release including Game Mode, 3D Paint, Privacy Options, and more.

Did you know that a new Office 365 feature requires the Windows 10 Creators Upgrade? Why? That’s because this new feature that lets you add 3D models in Office files such as PowerPoint presentations uses a feature set that’s installed as part of the Windows 10 Creators Upgrade. This is the same feature that lives within the Paint 3D app that comes as part of the Creators Upgrade.

Want to know more? Here’s a small FAQ, and a list of the new features.

  1. Do I need to pay to upgrade to the Windows 10 Creators Upgrade?

As long as you are running Windows 10, this upgrade is free. If you are running a previous version of Windows, such as 7 or 8, you will have to first get a paid upgrade.

  2. How do I know if I have Creators Upgrade already installed?
This is easy. Go to Settings | System | About. If you have Windows Creators Update installed, you will see a version number listed 1703 or higher, as highlighted in Figure 1, below.

  3. If I don’t already have the Creators Upgrade installed, will I get it eventually?
Yes indeed. Just be patient, and you will eventually be upgraded.
  4. What if I want the Windows 10 Creators Upgrade now?
You can download the update from Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page.

So what are the new features that you get as part of this new Windows 10 Creators Upgrade? Here is a small listing:

Game Mode

Game mode lets you work better with services like Twitch, provides better game recording abilities, the Game bar, and more. Most of these options can be found in the new Gaming section in the Settings panel (see Figure 2, below).

Improvements in Edge

Edge can now sweep away all your open tabs so that you have a cleaner browsing experience. When needed, all lost tabs can be restored (see Figure 3). Edge can also read all your EPUB ebook files natively now, without having to install a third-party reader. Even better, Edge will read aloud ebooks for you!

Paint 3D

This new app lets you “draw” 3D stuff directly, so that you end up creating 3D models, as shown in Figure 4, below. The existence of Paint 3D also lets you create models that you can animate within Office 365 versions of PowerPoint.

Additionally, you can also draw over photos or videos in the Photos app (see Figure 7).
